Education is unequivocally important for the development of any society, from our nascence to our demise. Ever since I was a kid, I was taught about the importance of education and how it is a fundamental building block for having a successful life. However, many kids have been denied this basic human right because of various barriers to education, whether it be location or socioeconomics. This is why I founded the Sunbeams Project: to help children receive quality education that focuses on real world concepts.
For the past year, I have been working with Mrs. Nasir and Mrs. Ali in The Sunbeams School System located in Pakistan that helps children receive access to quality education. We help children ranging from kindergarten all the way to 8th grade and beyond. The focus is on project based learning and helping children learn about real-world situations instead of asking them to simply regurgitate scientific concepts. We desire to create confident thinkers and help these children fight for a better tomorrow.
As I’m heading into my final year of high school, I still recall the importance of project-based learning and real world application and I believe teaching critical thinking is the mortar that builds success. We should focus on concepts that promote critical thinking, such as history, economics, environmentalism, and debate skills, which is why I decided that the Sunbeams Project should begin by focusing on elementary schools for impoverished children to help them acquire a better understanding at an earlier age.
